TIFF - Tagged Image File Format - is a raster image that contains a lot of data and is generally extremely high quality. Because of this, the file size tends to be quite large, so it’s not an easy file to upload or share quickly. You’ll likely come across TIFF files in professional photography and when you scan high-quality images, but it’s not something ever used in web graphics. It’s one of the highest quality image file types available, so use it when you’re planning on printing photos at a very high quality or scaling them up to a massive size. Think billboard advertising and other huge printed photographs.
A JPG file is a raster image file widely used across digital photography. JPG files are ideal for uploading and sharing online because of their small size and can be used and read by pretty much any program across computers and mobile devices. It’s the most widely used image compression format in the world and the default format for a lot of digital cameras and smartphone cameras. This is generally because they are very compressed without losing a huge amount of data. If you interact with any kind of digital photos, you’ll come across JPGs.
TIFF files are huge. There’s no doubt about it. They are designed for high-quality digital photography and often increased to huge sizes to print. Many digital cameras produce TIFFs when shooting raw, uncompressed images. But if you’re just sharing photos online, you might not need them to be of such high quality. Massive files take up hard drive space, are expensive to back up to the cloud, and are slow to upload. Try converting your TIFF files to JPG files instead. A JPG is much more compressed and a fraction of the size of a TIFF. This makes them perfect for sharing on social media or uploading to a website.
